# Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to a website from organic (non-paid) search engine results. The goal is to improve a site's visibility in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for relevant queries. SEO is not about tricking search engines but about creating a website that is valuable, accessible, and relevant to users, which search engines reward with higher rankings. It is typically broken down into three pillars: Technical SEO: The foundation of how a website is built and served to ensure search engines can crawl and index it effectively (e.g., site speed, mobile-friendliness, site structure). On-Page SEO: The optimization of individual pages and their content to rank for specific keywords (e.g., keyword usage in titles and content, image alt text, internal linking). Off-Page SEO: Actions taken outside of your own website to improve rankings, primarily through earning backlinks (links from other reputable sites to yours), which act as votes of confidence. For e-commerce, SEO is a critical long-term strategy for driving free, highly targeted traffic from people actively searching for products. It requires continuous effort but provides sustainable compounding returns.
