Festive Price Watch 2026: quick commerce and marketplace pricing, availability and discounts across four Indian cities

A first-of-its-kind in-house study of the Indian festive shelf, based on 1,040 manual observations.

Four 42Signals researchers recorded the same 32 festive SKUs on Blinkit, Amazon and Nykaa every day from 16 to 20 October 2026, in Ghaziabad, Pune, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The report documents how prices, product availability and discounts moved through the Dussehra sale period, and what it takes to monitor them.

The problem: the festive shelf is not one shelf

Most brands still review festive performance against a single national price and a single campaign discount. The Indian shelf no longer works that way. Quick commerce fulfils each pincode from a dark store with its own inventory, marketplaces restrict delivery by location, and prices change from one day to the next. A product that is in stock and discounted in one city can be out of stock, or priced higher, a few hundred kilometres away.
The stakes are rising. Quick commerce has become a festive channel in its own right, festive demand is concentrated into a small number of trading days, and from 1 January 2027 every announced discount must be shown alongside the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Brands that cannot see their shelf by pincode, platform and day cannot verify the price their shoppers are actually shown.
The Festive Price Watch tested this directly. Rather than relying on platform reports or national averages, 42Signals placed researchers in four cities and recorded the shelf as shoppers saw it, every day, through the Dussehra sale.

Four findings from the study

Each finding in the report follows the same structure: context, evidence, insight and implication, with exact prices by city and date.
Finding 1

The availability gap

33.6% of quick commerce and 23.7% of marketplace observations could not result in a purchase. Electronics reached 72% unavailability on quick commerce, festive staples 48%, and Mumbai’s quick commerce shelf 47%.
Finding 2

The pincode price

Prices differed between cities in 39% of marketplace and 28% of quick commerce like-for-like comparisons. On Dussehra, the Cadbury Celebrations gift pack sold for ₹91 in Bengaluru and ₹145 in Mumbai on the same marketplace.
Finding 3

The convenience premium

Across 212 matched observations, quick commerce was higher-priced in 65.1% of cases. The median premium was 6.3%, reaching 22.4% in protein and 15.2% in beauty.
Finding 4

The discount that did not arrive

The average marketplace discount declined from 24.2% to 21.4% on Dussehra, 46% of price series changed at least once, and 15 of 32 SKUs carried more than one MRP.

What you gain from the report

The report is written for teams responsible for festive revenue on Indian quick commerce and marketplaces. It answers specific operational questions with primary evidence that is not available from platform dashboards or industry estimates.

Why this study is different

To our knowledge, no comparable multi-city, manually recorded study of festive quick commerce and marketplace pricing has been published for the Indian market. The Festive Price Watch combines four cities, three platforms, 32 SKUs and five consecutive days through Dussehra, with exact prices recorded at fixed pincodes.
“Even daily checks can miss changes that happen within hours, highlighting the need for consistent, timely tracking.”
Study researcher, Mumbai
“Manual targeting and price noting is a labour intensive job, bound to have human errors when the data pool is so large and then needs more time to extract insights, overall, a liability for a brand with hero products.”
Study researcher, Pune

Manual monitoring compared with automated monitoring

The study also measured the cost of monitoring the shelf by hand. The comparison below sets the in-house exercise against the 42Signals live ecommerce marketplace data console for competitor price monitoring and digital shelf analytics.

Inside the report

Prepare before Diwali

Diwali falls on 8 November. The report’s recommendations are designed to be applied before the next sales peak: define priority pincodes, fix pack identity, report availability as a core metric, monitor the channel gap on hero SKUs, and begin the 30-day price record required from 1 January 2027.

Frequently asked questions

The Festive Price Watch is a first-of-its-kind in-house study by 42Signals. Four researchers recorded the price, MRP, discount and availability of the same 32 festive SKUs on Blinkit, Amazon and Nykaa every day from 16 to 20 October 2026, in Ghaziabad, Pune, Mumbai and Bengaluru, producing 1,040 manual observations.

In the study’s 212 like-for-like matches of the same pack, city and date, the marketplace was lower-priced in 65.1% of cases and quick commerce in 13.7%. The median quick commerce premium was 6.3%, rising to 22.4% in protein and 15.2% in beauty.

Quick commerce serves each pincode from a dark store with its own inventory, and marketplaces restrict delivery by location. In the study, the same SKU on the same platform on the same date, with the same MRP, carried a different price between cities in 39% of marketplace and 28% of quick commerce comparisons, rising to 51% on Dussehra.

During the Dussehra 2026 study period, 33.6% of quick commerce observations and 23.7% of marketplace observations could not result in a purchase because the product was out of stock, not listed or not deliverable to the pincode. Electronics reached 72% unavailability on quick commerce.

A dark store is a fulfilment centre that serves online orders for a defined delivery area rather than walk-in shoppers. Because each dark store holds its own stock, product availability on quick commerce can differ from one pincode to the next, which the study observed in 30% of quick commerce SKU-days recorded in two or more cities.

Not on the marketplace in this study. The average Amazon discount declined from 24.2% on 16 October to 21.4% on Dussehra, and more SKU and city pairs received a shallower discount (29%) than a deeper one (20%).

Under India’s Consumer Protection (E-commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, in force from 1 January 2027, an announced price reduction must be shown with the prior price, defined as the lowest price offered in the previous 30 days. In the study, 15 of 32 SKUs carried more than one MRP across listings, which makes a continuous price and MRP record essential.

Manual tracking in this study produced one observation per listing per day and required 14 to 43 minutes per city per day, with gaps in coverage. Automated competitor price monitoring with 42Signals captures price, MRP, discounts, stock, pincode availability and sponsored rank at pincode and dark-store level, refreshed as often as every 15 minutes.
